Dr Kathryn Cronin, Deputy President of the Australian Law Reform Commission, addressed the conference on “The Role and Management of Tribunals, The Review of the Australian Justice System” and Professor Sally Walker, Hearn Professor of Law and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Melbourne spoke on defamation law.
The Members were also addressed by Father Peter Norden, Director, Jesuit Social Services, on “Unequal in Life, The Distribution of Social Disadvantage in Victoria and New South Wales” and Senior Sergeant Michael Andrews, Operational Head of the Force Response Unit, Victoria Police, on hostage situations.
Mr George Polites, the former Director-General of the Confederation of Australian Industry, presented the after dinner address.
Members of the Commission also took part in a mediation training program run jointly by Melbourne University and the Trillium Group. The mediation seminars were held from 22 to 25 November 1999 and 7 to10 March 2000 and were attended by most Members.
Members are involved in a range of educational and professional development courses on an ongoing basis. In the reporting period, a number were enrolled in or completed undergraduate, higher studies or short courses - mainly in the fields of law, industrial relations and mediation.
